CO2 fire extinguishers (carbon dioxide) are safe to use on extinguishing electrical equipment fires because the gas within the extinguisher is non-conductive. Unlike some fire extinguishers, there is no sticky foam or powder residue once they have been used, so it makes cleaning up after the fire much easier. In addition to electrical fires, C02 extinguishers are also recommended for use on flammable liquids which are also known as Class B Fires. It is important to stress that this type of extinguisher should not be used on fires where flammable metal is present, or Class D fires as they are known. CO2 gas can cause a reaction with some volatile metals and can also spread the burning metal due the force of the discharge which can not always be seen due to the powder being expelled.
We also hold an Environment Agency Waste Carriers License which enables us to safely dispose of and recycle your old or unwanted fire extinguishers. There are very few companies who hold this license directly, but at Fire and Safety Solutions we feel strongly that we have a responsibility to dispose of fire extinguishers safely and responsibly.
